Description
The Brick Stree Methodist Church was founded in 1816, and the present building was erected in 1852. Many of the original settlers of Westminister Township are buried in the adjacent Brick Street Cemetery, including Phoebe McNames a heroine of the War of 1812. The Church was used for many years by the Methodist congreagation in the area and also for a short period of time to provide school space for the Brick Street School directly across the street. For a short period of time it was also used as a Quaker Meeting house and it was purchased by the Montessori House of Children in 1990 and continues to be used as a preschool until today. The Montessori House of Children for over 40 years has been making efforts to creatively use properties in London that also have historical significance.
Do London Experience
Visitors to this site will have the opportunity to view and walk through the adjacent cemetery and the Methodist Church that has maintained its original facade and interior sturcutre. They will have the opportunity to see and inspiring example of the creative reuse of a historical building where there will be a small display of the building's history and also a display on the Montessori method of education. There is a playground attached to the school that the public is welcome to access, although all families are required to supervise their children while using. Inside the building there will be a few activities suited to different ages to engage children while the adults can tour through the building.
