Description
Founded in 1980 and located in rental sites in both west and east London, the London Waldorf School purchased the London Tennis Club property in 1995. A permanent building was completed in 2004. A Great Hall with cathedral ceiling and stained glass (created by Grade 7 and 8 students with Ted Goodden)connects reclaimed, refurbished and repositioned portable classrooms. The massive hardwood trusses that crown the Great Hall carry the natural setting indoors: some beams came from black walnut trees that had to be removed from the site in the excavation for the building. The naturalized playground includes berms and swales, native plantings, and a vegetable garden area where each class has a plot. As well as being part of an independent school with Parent and Child classes through Grade Eight, the London W! aldorf School's magnificent venue hosts wedding ceremonies and receptions, family and company gatherings, club and group meetings, fitness classes, workshops, orchestra rehearsals, and conferences. Our school building is very much a work in progress, and it reflects both the ideals of Waldorf education and the realities of being a small not-for-profit organization.
Do London Experience
Guided tours of the school; displays pertaining both to the education and the original buildings from the site's history; children's art/craft activities. Tours of the school will include elucidating the unique and inspiring form that education takes at London's only Waldorf school. As well, you may participate in a tour of the grounds: Learn how by creating berms and swales, a small pond and an organic garden, and by landscaping with plants indigenous to our region, we have transformed a clay-court tennis facility into a beautiful oasis. The school will be undergoing a further transformation during July and August. Come and see how we have changed!
