The first known Muslims arrived in London in the late 1800s. Throughout the 1940s & 1950s, families would meet in each others homes every weekend to socialize and teach religion and culture to their children, who were the first generation of Muslims born in London. In 1955 the community, then consisting of only twelve families, purchased a property at the corner of Oxford & Summit street. The home on this property was renovated to serve both religious observances and social gatherings. Saturday evenings saw the community gathering for dinner, Sunday school was initiated for the children, weddings, funerals and prayers were held all held here in what became the first Mosque to be opened in Ontario and the largest Islamic institution in London! The community has grown tremendously over the decades and our institutions are growing to meet the need. The grounds at the London Muslim Mosque now consist of an award winning school, modern gymnasium. Recent renovations, which were completed in 2010 have added more space to accommodate the growing community.
Visitors will be welcomed to the LMM and will be able to take a walk through the beautiful marbled lobby, step into the carpeted prayer halls, view the library, and walk through the lower area and view the items on exhibition. Tour guides will be available in all areas to answer any questions. Attached to the LMM is the London Islamic School which is a proud participant of DO as well and welcomes visitors to tour.
