Attic Books is a large 19th-century building in the heart of downtown London that has housed merchants and craftsmen for over a century. A landmark for many, you can spot our shop in the streetscape by looking for our unique gargoyles. A three-story Red Brick Commercial building with an Arts & Crafts facade and interior details, Attic Books features hardwood floors and attractive tin ceilings. Walls of books set off the historic nature of this charming building where Londoners have shopped for over 100 years. Owned by Marvin Post since 1996, Attic Books was previously occupied by such businesses as Reid Brothers & Co., the Thomas Furniture Co. and Robert Holmes Books & Stationary. In addition to selling books, our floorspace is often occupied by meetings for local groups of hobbyists, antique hunters, collectors and artists. We are a gathering place for local historians and stock most local history publications, new and used. Many customers comment on the smell of old books. That is the smell of our history and the warm atmosphere that you can find here at Attic Books.
Walking into Attic Books, Londoners find a unique experience any day of the week. However, for Doors Open London we are providing guided tours and an up-close look at antique books not usually available to the public. Experience history as our tour guides take you through this local literary landmark, highlighting its growth and renovations through the years. Meet our mysterious basement ghost, "Roland," who likes to read and smoke cigars. Local history books, available for purchase, will surely enhance your journey through our historic building and others, bringing to life the Londoners who have passed through many doors in years past. Additionally, check our exhibit of historical items as well as information about the downtown area and major events in our past. Come and see for yourself one of London's best kept literary and cultural treasures.
